Level 3 Mechatronics Technician

An excellent opportunity to work in a 28-year established space battery engineering and manufacturing business based supporting ESA and national space primes around the world. The role works across all departments and have opportunity to set a career path. ABSL is a specialist subsidiary of the EnerSys Group, an international industrial battery manufacturer, designing, qualifying and manufacturing batteries for space applications. The company is a 100-person business based in the Culham Campus near Abingdon and the OAS training school. A company with a large global reach supplying the leading space agencies and satellite manufacturers. The company delivered the first ever Li-ion battery for ESA over 24 years ago and it is still successfully operating today.

The role is to work across all the customer delivery departments in the business to get an understanding for the space industry and what it takes to successfully deliver hardware to the global leading space primes, national and international space agencies including ESA and NASA. The role has been designed to develop knowledge building from safety aspects through the core components of the batteries to the final testing of the hardware. The apprentices will also spend time in the bid team so they can understand the full process from sales point through to final delivery. There will be additional external training in relevant aspects for the role and the candidates will have the opportunity to present their preferred choice for a career path within the business at the end of the apprenticeship scheme.  

In addition to the apprenticeship the role will undertake a number of other training and learning activities.   

The role will move between departments to ensure the candidates have a wide and in depth knowledge of the business and the candidates are expected to complete department specific training in each area. In addition to this there will be additional training is IOSH, Fire Marshal, First Aid, NEBOSH, 5S and Lean Methodologies. Further training will be identified dependent on candidate aptitude and career path which can include APM project management training or IPC Certification in soldering with a view to progressing ESA soldering and wiring certifications. 

Requirements

  • Good I.T. skills and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred. Any CAD or design knowledge in advance would be great but not essential. 
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to interact at all levels of the organisation. 
  • Enthusiastic and willingness to learn is important. 
  • Maths, English and a Science at grade 4/C or above
